Pro Deo et Patria et Universitate in illo ordine

What is the Nathanael Greene Society?

ngs

The Nathanael Greene Society is a fraternity of Gentlemen committed, first and foremost, to the life of the mind as an end in itself — a mission demanded of us with greater urgency in concurrence with the idle degradation of intellectual culture at our beloved Brown University.

The Nathanael Greene Society has been and will continue to be at the forefront of efforts to restore true Scholarship to the academy.

Statement of Principles

  • We affirm the primacy of the Permanent Things; that Truth is not the product of electoral majorities nor of intellectual movements, but, rather, of an omnipotent Creator.
  • We celebrate the best of what has preceded us; Art, Literature, Music, Philosophy and Religion are the pillars of the great Western Civilization of which we are an inseparable part, and which we embrace.
  • We commit ourselves to Faith and Reason; without humility and spirituality, the good and just life is simply impossible; without resort to free inquiry, we become susceptible to the tyranny of absolute and dogmatic ideologies.

Membership

Invitations to join The Nathanael Greene Society are extended once per year to Brown University men. Their acceptance entitles them to good Cigars, good Liquor, good Discussion, access to alums, and a lifetime of other vague benefits.
